Spell Description

A vertical column of divine fire roars down from the heavens in a location you specify. Each creature in a 10-foot-radius, 40-foot-high cylinder centered on a point within range must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 4d6 fire damage and 4d6 radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the fire damage or the radiant damage (your choice) increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 5th.

Is Flame Strike Good?

Overall Rating: Green. This means that flame strike is a good spell.

Overall Notes: Not particularly exciting when compared to fireball. It does the same amount of damage but has a better damage type (half radiant/half fire) and has a slightly larger radius. The "improved" damage type doesn't mean much because it still does half of it's damage as fire damage. So, if you're looking to work around fire resistance, this won't be a worthwhile choice.

Class Specific Ratings for Flame Strike

The Celestial warlock: Not particularly exciting when you compare it with fireball but seeing as the Celestial warlock doesn’t get fireball this is as good as your AoE will get.

War Domain cleric: Not particularly exciting when you compare it with fireball but seeing as the War Domain cleric doesn’t get fireball this is as good as your AoE will get.

Oath of Devotion paladin: Not particularly exciting when you compare it with fireball but seeing as the Oath of Devotion paladin doesn’t get fireball, and paladins struggle with AoE damage as is, this is a welcome addition.

Oath of Glory paladin: Not particularly exciting when you compare it with fireball but seeing as the Oath of Glory paladin doesn’t get fireball, and paladins struggle with AoE damage as is, this is a welcome addition.
