What Is Outlands Envoy 5e?

Having spent significant time in the crossroads of the multiverse, namely Sigil or the Outlands, you’ve been imbued with unique planar energies. The Outlands Envoy feat not only grants you the flexibility to increase any ability score of your choice, but it also equips you with the power to cast the misty step and tongues spells in a unique way. Whether you’re looking to swiftly traverse the battlefield or communicate with beings from various planes, this feat has you covered.

How Does Outlands Envoy Work?

This feat offers a blend of utility and versatility, allowing you to increase any ability score of your choice by 1, up to a maximum of 20. You also learn the misty step and tongues spells and can cast each spell once without using a spell slot, requiring a long rest before casting again in this manner. Notably, casting tongues requires no material components. If you have the appropriate spell slots, you can also cast these spells in the traditional way. The spellcasting ability is determined by what you chose in the Scion of the Outer Planes feat.

Prerequisite

This feat is a 4th-level feat and requires the Scion of Outer Planes (The Outlands) feat before you can pick it up. Luckily, you can get Scion of the Outer Planes for free at 1st-level by choosing the Planar Philosopher or Gate Warden background at character creation.

Is Outlands Envoy Good?

We gave Outlands Envoy a C Tier rating In our 5e Feats Tier List, making it a below-average feat in D&D 5e.

Even though this feat offers misty step and a 3rd-level spell, it’s still a fair bit weaker than Fey Touched. This is because tongues won’t have as much of an impact as some of the powerful 1st-level spells you can pick up with Fey Touched, despite it being a 3rd-level spell.

Which 5e Classes Make the Most of Outlands Envoy?

The color code below has been implemented to help you identify, at a glance, how good the Outlands Envoy 5e feat is for a specific class/subclass.

  • Red : Isn’t going to contribute to the effectiveness of your character build at all
  • Orange : Situationally good, but a below-average option otherwise
  • Green : A good option
  • Blue : A great option, you should strongly consider this option for your character
  • Sky Blue: An amazing option. If you do not take this option your character would not be optimized

Even though you can cast both misty step and tongues without a spell slot once per long rest, this feat is still primarily for spellcasters who will be able to use spell slots to cast these spells (most likely misty step) more than once per adventuring day.

Artificer: Getting a free casting of misty step once per day will help the artificer's limited spell slots, but they'll definitely find more value in the Fey Touched feat.

Barbarian: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make barbarians want to take this feat.

Bard: Unless you're some kind of inter-species negotiator for your party, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.

Cleric: While an ASI and a free casting of misty step and tongues isn't terrible for clerics, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.

Druid: While an ASI and a free casting of misty step and tongues isn't terrible for druids, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.

Fighter: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make fighters want to take this feat. Eldritch Knights may find slightly more value, but will find that Fey Touched is more impactful.

Monk: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make monks want to take this feat.

Paladin: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make paladins want to take this feat. If you want to add some magic to your paladin's repertoire, Fey Touched will be much more impactful.

Ranger: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make rangers want to take this feat. If you want to add some magic to your ranger's repertoire, Fey Touched will be much more impactful.

Rogue: One free casting of misty step and an ASI isn't enough to make paladins want to take this feat. If you want to add some magic to your rogue's repertoire, Fey Touched will be much more impactful.

Sorcerer: While an ASI and a free casting of misty step and tongues isn't terrible for sorcerers, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.

Warlock: While an ASI and a free casting of misty step and tongues isn't terrible for warlocks, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.

Wizard: While an ASI and a free casting of misty step and tongues isn't terrible for wizards, Fey Touched is going to provide more value.
