Unearthed Arcana: Horror Subclasses
This playtest introduces eight horror-themed subclasses, drawing on gothic, necromantic, and shadowy motifs. Most are revisions to existing 5e subclasses, updated to align with rules from the 2024 Player’s Handbook (e.g., clarity, scaling, subclass identity). Two—Artificer: Reanimator and Ranger: Hollow Warden—are brand new.
Bard: College of Spirits
| Feature | Level | Changed from 2020? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guiding Whispers | 3 | Unchanged | Retained, still grants extended-range Guidance. |
| Spirits from Beyond | 3 | Updated | More balanced spirit effects; now includes a Controlled Channeling option. |
| Spiritual Focus | 3 | Unchanged | Retained as a thematic flavor option for spellcasting focus. |
| Empowered Channeling | 6 | Updated | Now grants bonus damage or healing on spells; adds modified Spirit Guardians cast. |
| Mystical Connection | 14 | Updated | Now allows rolling twice for Spirits from Beyond and choosing the result. |
The most substantial revision is the addition of Controlled Channeling, which allows the player to choose the spirit effect rather than rolling randomly. This eliminates a major pain point while preserving the subclass’s storytelling theme. The spirits themselves have been streamlined and rebalanced, offering improved synergy with tactical play.
The rework of Spiritual Manifestation allows Spirit Guardians to be cast without a spell slot and adds a defensive layer—granting half cover within the aura—when modified. This improves survivability and area control. Finally, Mystical Connection at 14th level allows the player to roll two options for spirit effects and select the preferred one, further reducing unpredictability.
Cleric: Grave Domain

| Feature | Level | Changed from 2017? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circle of Mortality | 1 | Updated | Clarified healing bonus applies to Channel Divinity and spell healing at 0 HP. |
| Path to the Grave | 2 | Updated | Now imposes Disadvantage on attacks and saves in addition to enabling bonus damage. |
| Grave Domain Spells | 1+ | Updated | Spell list includes newer necromantic options (e.g., Vampiric Touch). |
| Sentinel at Death’s Door | 6 | Unchanged | Preserves reaction-based damage reduction with clearer scaling. |
| Divine Reaper | 17 | New | Allows targeting a second creature with necromancy or Grave Domain spells, plus healing on enemy death. |
The revised subclass introduces Pull of Death, which adds minor but scalable necrotic damage against Bloodied creatures once per turn. This provides more ongoing impact in combat. Path to the Grave has been meaningfully expanded to include Disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws, reinforcing its role as a single-target lockdown ability.
The capstone feature, Divine Reaper, allows a second target for low-level necromancy spells or Grave Domain spells via Channel Divinity, and adds a powerful area healing trigger when enemies die nearby. This provides both offensive and restorative benefits in high-stakes scenarios.
Ranger: Hollow Warden
| Feature | Level | Changed from 2014? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollow Warden Spells | 3+ | New | Introduces thematic prepared spells like Spike Growth and Hallucinatory Terrain. |
| Wrath of the Wild | 3 | New | Transformative feature tied to Hunter’s Mark; adds AC boost and enemy disruption aura. |
| Hungering Might | 7 | New | Grants Constitution save bonus and reactive healing while Bloodied. |
| Rot and Violence | 11 | New | Adds damage to aura failures and allows dual mastery property activation on hit. |
| Ancient Endurance | 15 | New | Allows self-revival by burning spell slots and grants Immunity to Exhaustion. |
The Hollow Warden is a brand-new subclass introduced in this Unearthed Arcana, designed to evoke the fearsome, ancient power of predatory nature spirits. It draws inspiration from the deep wilderness and mythic terrors, bringing a mix of primal rage, regeneration, and psychological intimidation to the Ranger class.
The central mechanic, Wrath of the Wild, activates whenever the Ranger casts Hunter’s Mark, creating a synergy between a staple Ranger spell and a thematic transformation. While transformed, the Warden becomes more durable (AC bonus), more threatening (Unnerving Aura), and potentially more monstrous through descriptive flavor. As the subclass progresses, its abilities reinforce its identity as a relentless apex predator: Hungering Might offers Bloodied healing on hit, Rot and Violence adds aura-based damage and enhanced weapon control via mastery effects, and Ancient Endurance introduces an on-death revive mechanic that enhances survivability in dramatic fashion.
Rogue: Phantom
| Feature | Level | Changed from 2020? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wails from the Grave | 3 | Updated | Damage scaling clarified; gains dual targeting at level 17. |
| Whispers of the Dead | 3 | Unchanged | Retained as a free short/long rest proficiency swap. |
| Tokens of the Departed | 9 | Updated | Now generates trinkets daily and enhances multiple subclass features. |
| Ghost Walk | 13 | Updated | Now grants flight and incorporeal movement with trinket regeneration hook. |
| Death’s Friend | 17 | Updated | Wails now affects both targets; passive trinket recovery added. |
The new implementation offers significant improvements to soul trinket functionality. Wails from the Grave now scales with Dexterity modifier and gains the ability at 17th level to apply its necrotic damage to both the original and secondary targets. Tokens of the Departed are now refreshed daily and provide robust benefits, including automatic Augury casting, advantage on death saves and Constitution saves, and synergy with other subclass features.
New additions include Voice of Death, allowing a free casting of Speak with Dead, and Ghost Walk, which introduces a limited flight and intangibility form, making the subclass tactically elusive and thematically rich.
Sorcerer: Shadow Sorcery

| Feature | Level | Changed from 2017? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eyes of the Dark | 1 | Updated | Still grants Darkvision, now includes Blindsight 10 ft. |
| Shadow Spells | 1+ | New | New thematic spell list provided at key levels. |
| Spirits of Ill Omen | 6 | Replaces Hound of Ill Omen | Summon Undead once per day and optionally without Concentration. |
| Shadow Walk | 14 | New | Grants long-range teleportation in dim light/darkness. |
| Umbral Form | 18 | Updated | Now includes damage resistance, incorporeality, and death save mechanic. |
The subclass now includes a new spell list, adding thematic and high-impact options such as Summon Undead and Phantasmal Killer. Spirits of Ill Omen replaces the hound with a no-slot casting of Summon Undead, which can be made Concentration-free at the cost of reduced duration. This is a notable improvement in both mechanical utility and action economy.
Shadow Walk introduces long-range teleportation in dim light or darkness, solving a major mobility concern. Umbral Form significantly boosts survivability with resistance to all damage types except Force and Radiant, incorporeal movement, and a Charisma-based death save replacement.
Warlock: Hexblade Patron

| Feature | Level | Changed from 2017? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hexblade’s Curse | 1 | Updated | Hex is now castable without a spell slot a number of times per day based on Charisma modifier. |
| Hexblade’s Maneuvers | 1 | New | Adds on-hit debuff options vs. cursed targets: movement, damage, or saving throw disruption. |
| Life Stealer | 6 | Updated | Improved healing and guaranteed damage even on misses against cursed targets. |
| Armor of Hexes | 10 | Updated | Now reduces damage by 2d8 + Charisma modifier instead of relying on a chance-based miss. |
| Masterful Hex | 14 | New | Grants crit range expansion and AoE damage spread from Maneuvers. |
The updated version rebalances the subclass by shifting emphasis away from passive offensive scaling and toward dynamic curse management. Hexblade’s Curse can now be cast for free a number of times per day, and is visually enhanced with a floating spectral weapon. Hexblade’s Maneuvers add minor crowd control or damage effects on hit, providing more tactical options.
Armor of Hexes is reworked as a reactive damage reduction ability, scaling with level and Charisma. Masterful Hex broadens critical threat range and allows minor splash damage to a second nearby target. Concentration is now protected via Resilient Hex.
Warlock: Undead Patron

| Feature | Level | Changed from 2021? | Changes to the 2025 Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form of Dread | 1 | Updated | Now includes temporary hit points, damage conversion to necrotic, and immunity to the Frightened condition. |
| Undead Spells | 1+ | Updated | Expanded to include newer thematic options and clarifies effect during Form of Dread. |
| Grave Touched | 6 | Updated | Necrotic damage now bypasses resistance entirely. |
| Necrotic Husk | 10 | Updated | Triggers AoE explosion on death and restores HP with a cost (Exhaustion). |
| Superior Dread | 14 | Updated | Adds flight, passive healing, and componentless casting for Necromancy/Conjuration spells. |
Form of Dread has been significantly enhanced: it now includes a damage-type conversion to necrotic and provides temporary hit points. Grave Touched ensures necrotic damage bypasses resistance, which is crucial against undead or other death-resistant foes.
At 10th level, Necrotic Husk offers a powerful fallback feature: a death-triggered AoE explosion followed by self-revival with temporary hit points, albeit with an exhaustion penalty. Superior Dread adds flight, free casting of necromancy and conjuration spells without components, and passive necrotic healing.
