A New Organized Play Campaign on the Horizon
The world of Greyhawk is about to take center stage in Dungeons & Dragons with the highly anticipated launch of the Legends of Greyhawk organized play campaign. While the full launch is slated for Gen Con 2025, fans can get a sneak peek at MagicCon: Chicago this February. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for this exciting campaign!
New Adventures in Greyhawk
This organized play campaign comes on the wake of D&D’s 2024 Anniversary Play Series, other convention-based games set in the world of Greyhawk, like Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth , Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn, and Scions of Elemental Evil.
Grewyhawk’s Revival in the 2024 Core Rules
The Legends of Greyhawk campaign is rooted in the Flanaess, the central region of the storied world of Greyhawk. Created by Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax in the early 1970s, Greyhawk was originally developed as the setting for his personal home campaign. Over time, it evolved into one of the most iconic and enduring settings in the game, filled with perilous dungeons, sprawling cities, and tales of legendary heroes.
Greyhawk became a cornerstone of D&D’s early days, serving as the foundation for numerous classic adventures and supplements. The infamous Temple of Elemental Evil, the sprawling dungeon of Castle Greyhawk, and the harrowing The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth all took place within this realm. In particular, the Flanaess region of Greyhawk offered a world where players could explore the dungeon-crawling and wargaming ways that were ever-present in the early days of the game.
Greyhawk was also one of the first settings used in organized play, beginning with events like the Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth tournament modules. These scenarios were crafted for conventions and served as a way for players across the globe to experience a unified storyline, laying the groundwork for the kind of shared, interconnected campaigns that Legends of Greyhawk will build upon.
Evolving Story
In the new campaign, set in 576 CY (Common Year), adventurers will return to the Flanaess, with The Free City of Greyhawk, as a vibrant hub of trade, adventure, and intrigue at its center. While we don’t know exactly what the story line will be, it supposedly will evolve based on how the adventures progress at conventions around the world, so stay tuned for more information on that!
Character Creation
This campaign exclusively uses content from the 2024 Core Rulebooks, so, as a player, you need a D&D Beyond account and access to the 2024 Player’s Handbook or the 2024 D&D Free Rules.
Creating your character for Legends of Greyhawk is straightforward but adheres to specific guidelines:
- Start with Standard Character Creation: Use the D&D Beyond Character Builder or follow the “Creating a Character” section of the 2024 Core Rulebooks.
- Sources and Options: Only the 2024 Player’s Handbook and D&D Free Rules are allowed. Turn off other sourcebooks and content.
- Ability Scores: Choose either Standard Array or Point Buy.
- Alignment Restrictions: Evil alignments are not permitted.
- Trinkets: Roll or select a Tiny trinket from the Trinkets table.
Characters begin at level 1, with higher-level character creation options to be introduced later.
Adventures and Advancement
Each adventure in Legends of Greyhawk is designed for a concise 2-4 hour session, optimized for three hours of gameplay. These adventures emphasize flexibility, allowing DMs to expand or compress as needed.
Character progression follows a session-based advancement system:
- Level 2: After 1 adventure session
- Level 3: After another session
- Levels 4-5: After 2 sessions per level
- Levels 5-10: After 3 sessions per level
Higher-level advancement and campaign features will be unveiled in future updates.
Treasure and Rewards
Looting has never been more exciting! After completing an adventure, players can choose from three reward options:
- Featured Magic Item: A specific magic item tied to the adventure.
- Random Magic Item: Roll for a chance at one of several magic items.
- Gold and Treasure: Monetary rewards scaled to the adventure tier.
Magic item possession is capped based on character tier:
- Tier 1 (Levels 1-4): One Uncommon or Rare item, up to five Common items.
Physical reward cards or certificates will debut at conventions like MagicCon: Chicago. These cards can be traded one-for-one, adhering to tier restrictions, and may open up trading opportunities at special Trading Posts during future events.
