What are Adamantine Weapons?
Adamantine weapons are created from their namesake metallic composition. This jet-black ultrahard metal is incredibly rare and incredibly durable. While no true magical weapons exist specifically with this metal in mind, it’s something that does exist within the D&D universe.
What Does Adamantine Weapon do?
As we said before, there really aren’t any actual items with stats within 5e. According to Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, these weapons are “unusually effective when used to break objects. Whenever an adamantine weapon or ammunition hits an object, the hit is a critical.”
Aside from that, the only other information we’re given is that these weapons typically cost 500gp more than the traditional version, including ammunition.
Is the Adamantine Weapon a Good Magic Item?
On paper, these items seem pretty underwhelming. If you or your team aren’t hitting inanimate objects often, then there isn’t much reason to keep an eye out for these in the wild. However, if you can lay out some ground rules to what an “object” is defined by, you may be able to use this as a way to destroy shields and weapons. But this still requires input from your Dungeon Master.
Outside of that, these weapons can find some use in edge cases where things need to be destroyed, but it isn’t a priority for most adventurers.
What Builds Want an Adamantine Weapon?
Since these weapons only affect inanimate objects, there really aren’t any builds that need these weapons. If you can talk to your DM about the properties of Adamantine, there is some merit in a duelist build that can break weapons and armor, but it still falls under their discretion.
Adamantine Weapon Price
According to the text in Xanathar’s Guide To Everything, all adamantine weapons and ammunition are a flat 500 gold in addition to the price of the normal weapon.
