A New and Whimsical D&D 5e Campaign Setting
Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is landing on D&D Beyond, meaning you can now experience this incredibly charming, Ghibli- and Zelda-inspired setting integrated into the rest of your digital toolkit!
A Kickstarter Smash Hit
It’s no exaggeration to say that Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass made waves. When 1985 Games launched its Kickstarter, they were probably hoping for a solid turnout—but what they got was one of the largest D&D Kickstarters ever at over $2.6 million in backing from over 26,000 backers.
Turns out, a lot of us were hungry for a world that blends old-school fantasy with a touch of nostalgia and slice-of-life charm.
It also appears Wizards of the Coast was hungry to make this a part of their 3P library, because the physical books haven’t even hit shelves and they’ve already brought it into the fold.
How Much Does It Cost?
You can grab Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass on D&D Beyond now for $29.99, which is the same as the digital PDF they sell on their official store. So, if you are already invested in D&D Beyond and use their toolset for the Maps VTT or Character Builder, this could be a good option.
Why I Love Obojima
If you’ve ever wanted to play a D&D campaign where you can brew potions, befriend spirits, uncover an ominous Corruption spreading across the land, or simply grab some good ramen on your way to a mystical shrine, now’s your chance.
There’s something special about a world that doesn’t just invite adventure—it invites you to slow down and take it all in. Obojima isn’t about epic wars or world-ending catastrophes; it’s about the joy of discovery, the magic woven into daily life, and the simple pleasures of a well-cooked meal after a long journey. This is leisure fantasy at its finest, a setting where exploration and wonder take center stage rather than combat and conflict.
If you’re like me and grew up watching My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, or playing The Legend of Zelda, Obojima will feel like home. Even now, I find myself playing Stardew Valley or Valheim over high-octane games, so I love how this setting captures that nostalgic charm and slower pace these chiller games.
I also had the chance to sit down with Jeremiah Crofton, one of the lead designers of Obojima, to talk more about their world, which you can read about on D&D Beyond.
Jeremiah and co-designers Ari Levitch and Adam Lee have a video podcast that’s also full of awesome world-building advice, so I highly recommend checking that out if you’re interested in the setting.
Get Ready to Make a Weird and Wonderful Character
This setting isn’t just about the world—it’s also packed with fresh ways to create a character who truly belongs in it. Here’s what you’re getting:
- Three New Ancestries – The Dara are enigmatic beings born from the roots of sacred trees, inheriting knowledge from mystical glyphs left by their predecessors. Insatiably curious, they wander Obojima, chronicling their discoveries and unraveling the mystery of their origins. The Nakudama are small, frog-like spirit folk who embrace life’s pleasures with boundless enthusiasm, thriving in social hubs and weaving elaborate tales of their adventures.
- Eleven Subclasses – Whether you’re an Origami-wielding Wizard, a Mask-wearing Bard, a Belly Brewer Barbarian concocting magical potions in your stomach, or even a Sheep Dragon Monk (designed by the community!), Obojima has subclasses that feel like they naturally belong in this world.
- Four New Factions – Align with a witch coven, join an adventurous youth scout group, become part of a diver league searching for ancient artifacts, or take on the academic life of an explorer-researcher.
- Two New Skills – Mechanics helps you break and fix things, while Salvaging lets you scavenge useful materials from the world around you.
- 20 Feats – Train in specialized sword-fighting techniques, gain abilities tied to your ancestry, or earn unique perks based on your chosen faction.
- 48 Magic Items – From flame-trail-leaving bicycles to keytars that channel arcane energy, the magic items in Obojima are as stylish as they are powerful.
- 50 New Spells – Use Jolt to power up ancient machines, conjure weapons out of vegetables, sculpt sand into elaborate structures, or even create magical train stops to aid your travels.
- 60 Monsters & NPCs – Spirit companions, legendary creatures, corrupted horrors—there are plenty of new faces (friendly and otherwise) to meet on your journey.
- Potions, potions, potions! – Obojima introduces a robust potion-brewing system with over 130 ingredients and 180 potions that range from combat-ready elixirs to fun, quirky brews that can be seamlessly integrated into any campaign.
